The portfolio of equipment would be expensive to set up from scratch so this business would allow a new owner to continue in a “business as usual” fashion. There is always the opportunity to expand the business as there is a developing dearth of metals and materials expertise as the academics and other senior specialists have retired or are in the process of retiring. The current proprietor is in the retiring age category and is keen to find a suitable successor to carry on the business which was established over thirty years ago.

R&D was founded by Bob Redfern when the DSIR was disbanded in 1992. John Mitchell has taken over from Ian and comes from a manufacturing background. He has been involved at a technical level in making castings in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, ductile iron (SG), white irons (NiHard), austenitic irons (NiResist), aluminium alloys (601 & 401), bronze alloys (AB2), zinc alloys and lead. He also has experience in the supply of tool steels (D2, P20, H13, O1, A2, W1) and in the heat treatment industry. His knowledge on other materials is also extensive from surface coatings to space-age refractories. He has helped change enterprises based on the black arts of the past to today’s science of metals and materials behaviour.
